Recording Diary Part 4
Wednesday 10th Aug.
10am start today, we have finished all the guitars for now, including ‘Breakdown’ which was great fun, by far the heaviest Chris Tye track to date, I am loving the sound of it.
We also recorded all the vocals with the exception of ‘Blue Blue Sun’. To record the vocal takes I was positioned in between 2 very heavy curtains, this is great for that close intimate vocal sound but also means that you can lose your self in there and forget anyone else is listening, a nice vibe for vocals.
All the vocals went down in 4 hours, super quick (Tim working so fast suited me down to the ground, keeps everything fresh and eliminates those horrible stagnant periods you can often hit in studios.
After we finished at the studio I went straight to play at the Quadrant pub in Brighton. Had no idea what to expect, a guy called Kevin Murphy sorted me out with a few gigs while I’m down here.(From what I know of Kevin Murphy he is a great man. He just wants to help me, I’ve met him 4 times and 3 of those have been at gigs he has arrange and put me on the bill at a moments notice! he gave me a capo (a really good one) he doesn’t drink and he’s in a band called KATE from Brighton who are fucking unreal)….anyway the gig was amazing, tiny room and stage, just a great atmosphere for a Wednesday night. Thank Kev.
Picked up some mixer on the way back to my mate Ben’s and had a lovely big Jack Daniels nightcap.

Recording Diary Part 3
Tuesday 9th Aug.
Was up with the lark this morning, how could I lay in when there are basses and guitars to record!
Simon and Matt arrive around 11am telling stories of the B&B proprietor who had taken offense when he thought he’d been addressed as ‘mate’!, they were glad to make it to the more relaxed studio environment.
Simon did an excellent job of finishing off his double bass tracks before moving on to the electric bass stuff. We put a ribbon mic on the speaker, never seen that done before, it sounds great! phat and round but still has definition.
With bass and drums in the can the boys head out on to the mean streets of Brighton and Hove leaving me to get stuck into guitars!
We started with a few acoustic tracks, it was super good fun to hear these parts recorded through an amazing pre-amp and compressor, sounds so intimate, better than I could have hoped, really happy with my playing too. We mainly used Tim’s Martin acoustic.
On to electric guitars! great, great fun! Tele or 335 through a vibro-king with a nice ribbon mic on it! what a sound! just wanted to play all day and guess what?! I did!
Tim’s finely tuned ears and sound manipulation were really put to the test when I asked him to make the first guitar on ‘Forever For The Better’ sound ‘a bit like Jeff Buckley grace guitars’ ……within about 10 mins we had that sorta sound. Doing takes with such an ace sound was a real joy.
Some of the songs have taken unexpected twists whilst being in the studio, maybe not how I could have envisaged them sounding. This is exactly what I wanted, a fresh sound, not just me and a guitar, more dynamic, something you can bop your head to.
Back to my mate Ben’s after a highly productive day, for a well earned beer…..or 6!….Ben is an animal…more about this later.

Recording Diary Part 2
Monday 8th Aug.
Drum Day!
Recording the drums today with a guy called Toby, lovely chap and a drummer himself, which helped. Tim was overseeing and producing the whole process. We basically played the songs for 5 hours with Simon on bass and me on guitar and singing and at the end of it we had captured the drums beautifully, they have a really nice feel.
We left the Metway and headed to Tim’s studio to record some bass in what was left of the day. Double bass was first………what a great sound, so big and satisfying. Whilst Simon played through some tracks in the most professional way Matt and I began to make plans for that evening………..
………. A beautiful spicy, clean Thai meal, followed a load of beer and……….vodka ironbrew! who’d have thought it ay?!
Finished a great day by listening to Jessica Hoop and Carina Round with Tim before peacefully passing out on the studio floor………a least I’ll be on I’d be on time in the morning.

Recording Diary Part 1
I’ve recently been in Brighton recording a new EP, and decided to keep a diary along the way. I’ll be adding them to the blog over the next few days, so without further ado, here’s the first entry:
Sunday 7th August
Arrived at the studio about 6pm, filled up Tim’s kitchen with amps, drums and a double bass, then out for a couple of pints of Brighton Best @ The Hampton, a great little boozer.
Was so good to see Tim again, it had been a couple of weeks since we recorded the first track for the ‘MATCHBOX STAND’ EP, called ‘What More Can I Say?’. That first session was great, gave me a real insight into how he works! Quick, spontaneous and full of vibe! The track sounds ace – crisp, fresh and not over instrumentated (yes, a new word).
Dropped the boys back at their B&B and then off to see my old mate Ben for a catch-up and a nightcap!
Can’t flippin’ wait for the drums tomorrow @ The Metway Studio. I love recording – fact.
